In the western culture, skincare is seen more like a women’s thing, unlike South Korea for example where is very common for men to have consistent skincare regimens; it’s about hygiene more than beauty. However, it’s becoming more common for men to explore skincare products, you know more than just a bar of soap or hair-face-body wash cleansers. Simultaneously, more questions are being asked, so Lorde+Belle has decided to create a simple guide to help anyone who is looking to start a skincare routine and is clueless.
- Skin type. Before you start your hunt for skincare products, it is important you identify and understand your skin type and skin conditions. Your skin type will determine the products and ingredients you need to use. It is important to be aware of any skin conditions you may have like eczema, rosacea or acne. The major skin types are: Sensitive skin may sting or burn after product use, easily irritated, redness. Normal skin has a balance of water and oil, it’s clear and not sensitive. Dry skin is flaky, itchy or rough. Oily skin is shiny and greasy with visible pores. Combination skin is dry in some areas (usually cheeks) and oily in others (T-zone)
- Basic skincare regimen. Dermatologists have concluded that your skincare routine can be as simple as three steps! So, there is no excuse for you to skip your skincare. All you need to get started is a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Cleansing is one of the three fundamental steps of taking care of your skin, and I am not talking about your bar soap. You need to find a gentle cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin squeaky clean and tight after cleansing. And you shouldn’t be aggressive; apply gentle circular motions and take your time (30-60 seconds). It is important to cleanse 1-2 times a day and after sweating.
Moisturizing your face is crucial! You need to supply your skin with hydrating and nourishing ingredients, to strengthen skin barrier and have a healthy skin. Depending on your skin type, you can choose a thick or thin moisturizer and make sure to use it morning and night. And the last step is sunscreen.
Sunscreen should be used every single day, no matter what season or type of weather is. Daily application of spf prevents skin cancer, hyperpigmentation and premature aging. Choose a sunscreen that you enjoy wearing, use an adequate amount and make sure to reapply every 2-3 hours if you are exposed to sun.

- Watch your shaving technique. Razor bumps, ingrown hair, acne, scares and redness may be common after shaving. Use a single- or double-blade razor instead of multi-blade and do not stretch your skin while shaving. Make sure to moisturize right after and avoid products with fragrance as they can sensitize the skin.
- Know your actives. Active ingredients are the key agents in a product that target specific concerns. For example, if your main concern is post-acne marks or dark spots, look for Vitamin C or Alfa Arbutin. If you want something to target acne, give Salicylic Acid a go or if you skin feels dehydrated add Hyaluronic Acid to your skincare regimen. Active ingredients come in different products, but usually you can find them in form of a serum.
